Video: Mitchell talks Bulls' recruitment plan
REACTION: John Mitchell eager to reassess the Bulls ‘recruitment process’ ahead of next year season.
The New Zealander admitted that his aim of restoring the Bulls to its former glory days have to require the addition of a few new experienced faces at the franchise.
The three-time Super Rugby Champions have been in free-fall since the departure of former coach Frans Ludeke in 2015.
This season, the Bulls only managed to win six of their 16 games and finished bottom of the South African conference, level on points with the Stormers, but behind on points difference.
Saturday’s 12-38 defeat to the Lions just solidified the Bulls’ troubling season.
The Bulls raced to a 12-0 lead inside 10 minutes. However, lack of discipline, aided by the Lions dominance, saw them suffer defeat number 10.
“One thing that cost us [this season was] game injuries and the lack of depth,” Mitchell told reporters after the match in Johannesburg.
“We got a very good process, very good systems and we need to recruit – as simple as that.
“We got to change our model from quantity to quality.
“We need to create two teams of Super Rugby quality, who will be able to manage the workload and handle injuries.
“We should stop exposing youngsters to the Super Rugby too quickly.
“We relied too much on youngsters, who cant handle the competition, and Test players, who simply can’t last the whole season,”
