According to Lions team doctor Rob Collins, scans showed that the 29-year-old has a torn ligament in his pelvis.
He does not require surgery at the moment but will be out of action for six to eight weeks.
This means, the skipper will miss the last two Super Rugby two matches against Sunwolves and Sharks, and misses the play-offs.
Not only is this a huge blow for the Lions, the skipper could be doubtful for the Springboks Rugby Championship opener.
The Springboks kick-off their Championship campaign against Argentina in Port Elizabeth on August 19.
