Wilson smells blood in the water
New recruit Jack Wilson believes that the Sharks are stepping up their attack this year as they build on their defensive strength from last season.
Wilson joined the Sharks from English Premiership side Saracens, having previously played in New Zealand's NPC and also represented the country of his birth in Sevens.
The Kiwi-born wing, who holds a British passport, is looking forward to playing the type of game the Sharks are building towards in their pre-season.
"From what I’ve seen, The Sharks were very good defensively last year. So there is a good base here," he told the Sharks website.
"Attacking-wise, they seem to have really stepped it up this year and we’re working towards something that’s going to be great for the fans too because we play for them."
Wilson is looking to bring his vast experience to the Sharks and hopes to aid them with the skills he has picked up in England, New Zealand and on the Sevens circuit – as well as from being a loose forward.
"I was a loose forward for many years until the end of University," he added.
"I played some Sevens and when Bay of Plenty offered me a contract, I said I’d play anywhere they wanted me to.
"After being picked out for having a bit of pace, they said they wanted to start a bit of a project with me and that’s how I ended up on the wing.
"The learning curve when I went to Saracens was quite steep but it did wonders for me.
"The game in the NPC is a lot looser with a big emphasis on attack. I believe Saracens are one of the best defensive sides around and what I learned was a lot different to what I was used to.
"The Northern versus Southern Hemisphere debate rages on."
Wilson goes on to talk more about the pre-season and how things are being done differently at the Sharks.
"For pre-season training we’re doing a lot of fitness games, which are skills and fitness based," he said.
"There seems to be little point running up a hill with a log on your back, because you don’t ever do that in a rugby game. The best way to get fit is to play rugby. Everyone talks about how rugby-fit they are a few matches in.
"You hear about some pretty brutal stuff in pre-season and I was pretty nervous, but we’re being nicely looked after and they know the best strength and conditioning programme to get the most out of us."
