Bordeaux keep their Bok back

Former All Black Bruce Reihana and South African scrumhalf Heini Adams have both signed new two-year contracts with Top 14 side Bordeaux-Begles, club President Laurent Marti announced.

Reihana, 36, and 31-year-old Adams joined three other players in signing new two year contracts further boosting the Top 14 newboys, who thrashed Stade Français 39-6 at the weekend.

Adams – who joined the club when they were in the second tier in 2010 – especially earned high praise from Marti, who had had to confirm that team manager Marc Delpoux was stepping down from his position and was due to take up another challenge elsewhere.

“Adams has re-signed for another two years and for less money, which should send out signals to the professional rugby world,” commented Marti, who had blamed the iniquities of the professionalisation of rugby for Delpoux’s decision to resign.

Before moving to France, Adams played for the three-time Super Rugby champion Bulls. He toured with the Springboks to France, Italy, Ireland and England in 2009.

Australian back row forward Justin Purll, 32, also extended his stay with the club for another year while French duo centre Julien Rey, 25, and lock Adam Jaulhac, soon to turn 24, signed contracts keeping them there till 2014.

Bordeaux had already persuaded Australian wing Blair Connor, who scored two tries in the win over Stade, to extend his contract by another two years prior to Christmas.

Bordeaux are presently ninth in the Top 14 eight points outside the top six play-off places and just six points above the drop zone, though, they have a game in hand.
