Wales and Toulouse scrap for Alfie - again
In what has become an annual tug-of-war, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Toulouse have once again become embroiled in a dispute over the availability of Wales star Gareth Thomas.
The 32-year-old is wanted by his country for the forthcoming tour of Australia, and also by his club for the final game of the French championship.
Toulouse play their last Top 14 fixture against Bourgoin on Saturday, May 26 – the same day as Wales face Australia in Sydney.
“We have put in a formal request to the French Federation for clearance for Gareth,” WRU boss Roger Lewis told Wales on Sunday.
“I have discussed the issue with [France Rugby Federation president] Bernard Lapasset and we are hopeful this issue will be resolved.
“We have begun the process and are expecting a response this week.”
Wales coach Gareth Jenkins is expected to name a 28-man squad for the two-Test trip on Monday, April 30.
