Baby Boks rise as Baby Blacks fall

In a day of upsets at the IRB Junior World Championships South Africa Under-20 thrashed Italy, while defending champions New Zealand lost to Wales.

The Welsh Under-20 team caused the biggest upset of the tournament's history by condemning New Zealand to a shock 9-6 defeat – the Baby Blacks' first loss since the age groups were changed from Under-21 and Under-19 to Under-20.

The match was played in shocking conditions at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday.

On the same day, just up the road at the UWC Stadium in Cape Town the Baby Boks hit their straps to produce in a 52-3 thrashing of Italy in their second match – having suffered a shock loss to Ireland earlier in the week.

The South Africans led 19-3 at the break and scored three tries in the first half while they added five more in the second half.

With England having beaten Ireland 20-15 in Stellenbosch, South Africa and England will now go head-to-head in the pool decider on Tuesday. The winner will top the pool and advance automatically to the semifinals, the loser will rely on other result in the hope of advancing.

In torrential rain and a mud-laden pitch, England had to work hard for their win and were trailing 3-15 with just over 25 minutes left to play. But a penalty try and a Kyle Sinckler score helped England across the line as Tom Heathcote added 10 points with the point.

The shocks did not end with New Zealand's loss.

Australia slumped to a surprisingly big 3-15 loss against Argentina and France edged Scotland 30-29. In the day's other game Fiji beat Pacific rivals Samoa 15-3.

Wales coach Danny Wilson said his team's win over the Kiwis will stick with the players and is an achievement that nobody can take away from any of them.

"It is one that we have worked extremely hard for and we talked about it, somebody had to beat them at some stage, they were not going to keep that record forever, why can't it be us? The conditions obviously suited us and we got what we deserved," Wilson said.

New Zealand captain Bryn Hall said they were "very disappointed" and will have to recover very quickly.

"We have a four day turn around to come and we have to train very hard and be ready for Fiji," Hall said, adding: "We have to play very well against Fiji, get our composure, bring back out set piece and hopefully it will go better."

Wales captain Kirby Myhill said: "It's an honour just be captain, to play against New Zealand one of the best teams in the world, it's an amazing feeling. New Zealand are an amazing team but we were never going to lose, it meant so much to us after last year when we lost 92-0. That was a big loss, we wanted prove a point and I think we did that.

"They have never lost in four years, that says what a great team they are and shows how well we played – we cannot take anything away from the boys, it was amazing."

New Zealand coach Rob Penney was obviously "very disappointed" with the result.

"The effort and energy was there but not the accuracy," Penney said.

"Our game management was poor and the Welsh made us suffer for that. The boys are desperately keen to do well, you will never see a New Zealand team lie down and I didn't feel we were beaten – we were on the scoreboard but we got into positions but it just didn't happen for us.

"That's a real possibility (for us to still reach the semi finals), we got to re-group, review and improve on the things we didn't do well. The boys are heartbroken at the moment, they must get up, we have another job to do in four or five days so we look forward to that."
