Records fall at IRB Junior champs

New Zealand wing Julian Savea and England fullback Tom Homer wrote their names into the IRB Junior championship record books on day two of the 2010 tournament in Argentina on Wednesday.

Savea crossed for four tries in New Zealand’s 77-7 defeat of Samoa in their Pool C encounter in Santa Fe, equalling the record for the most tries scored in a single match held by Australian trio Richard Kingi, Kurtley Beale and Dane Haylett-Petty.

Homer, meanwhile, kicked 21 points in England’s 36-21 victory over Under-20 Six Nations champions Ireland in Rosario to become the leading point scorer in Junior World Championship history with 112.

Nearly 50 000 fans have attended the two match days across the three host venues with Rosario again drawing the biggest crowds, although they went home disappointed after Argentina lost 31-23 to France despite a stirring second half fight back.

Australia and South Africa both looked impressive in scoring 11 tries to overcome Tonga 67-5 and Scotland 73-0 respectively in Pool C, while Wales were the other winners on day two after beating Fiji 31-3.

The pool stages climax on Sunday with three mouth-watering matches to determine the semifinalists as New Zealand face Wales and South Africa tackle Australia in Santa Fe, while England meet France in Rosario.
