Other players unavailable due to injury include JC Pretorius, Raynard Roets, Morné Brandon and Zander du Plessis.

Lock Reinhard Nothnagel will run out for his 50th match for the Lions.

Renzo du Plessis, who had a sterling Currie Cup campaign also receives his first start.

“It’s important for us to keep the momentum,” Van Rooyen said.

“We were happy with the momentum we took into the recent Currie Cup campaign and it’s important for us to maintain that going into this year’s URC season.

“As a group, we are excited about the upcoming URC.

“There’s a great vibe and energy within the squad.

“We have six URC debutants featuring this weekend comprising of a combination new signings and guys from the recent Currie Cup.

“Ultimately, it’s important for us to start well at home this weekend against an Ulster team who beat the defending champions last weekend.

“We know they’ll arrive ready to go so we’ll be up for it,” he concluded.
