Leinster fight back against Munster, Steyn scores for Glasgow in tight Italy win
SATURDAY WRAP: Leinster fought back from a 0-13 first-half deficit to beat Munster 24-18 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and seal their second win of the season.
Munster opened up a healthy lead after the first half-hour through two penalties from flyhalf Charlie O’Shea and a brilliant converted try from winger Shane Daly, who finished off a thrilling team move.
Leinster responded before half-time as scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park spanned a superb pass from the base of the scrum to right wing Tommy O’Brien, who went over to reduce the arrears to 13-5.
The visitors came under heavy pressure after the restart and held on to their eight-point advantage until the 55th minute when flanker Ryan Baird crashed over from close range.
Leinster flyhalf Joey Carbery converted to make it 13-12, and with Munster down to 14 men after centre Alex Nankivell was shown a yellow card, the home side were rewarded for more sustained pressure.
Replacement flyhalf Charlie Tector scampered over to put Leinster 17-13 ahead, and centre Jamie Osborne touched down in the corner after another long pass from Gibson-Park to extend their lead to 24-13 before Munster fullback Ben O’Connor scored his side’s second try in the final minute.
*Jare Oguntibeju’s late try gave Glasgow a battling 24-20 win over Benetton in Treviso to move second in the United Rugby Championship.
Warriors captain Kyle Steyn saw his try in the 26th minute ruled out for a forward pass, before Benetton went ahead on the half-hour when Federico Zanandrea sprinted clear to go over in the corner. A penalty from Jacob Umaga just ahead of the break gave the home side a 10-0 lead.
Benetton had another try two minutes after the restart when winger Louis Lynagh burst down the flank after latching onto a loose pass, before Mattia Midena picked up a yellow card for a no-arms tackle.
Glasgow made the most of their advantage, with first Euan Ferrie crossing following a maul before Steyn added another try in the corner.
The Warriors then levelled things up at 17-all straight from the restart as Rory Darge finished off a sweeping move in the 56th minute, with Matt Urwin’s conversion attempt going wide.
Benetton edged back in front in the 68th minute through a long-range penalty from Umaga, but the Warriors responded again when Oguntibeju barged over with two minutes left and Bayley Kuenzle slotted over the kick to secure a hard-earned third URC win.
