Gumede joined the Bulls ahead of the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship season from rivals the Sharks.

The 23-year-old made his debut at the weekend against Cardiff.

Unfortunately, his first outing was cut short due to an ankle strain he suffered in the first half.

The Bulls went on to record an 18-12 win, which saw them climb to the top of the URC log with 15 points.

Speaking to reporters, Gumede said the switch to the Bulls has made him very happy.

He struggled to cement his place in the Sharks’ URC side but was a regular in their Currie Cup squad.

“I’ve been in Durban for my entire life and I thought a change would be good for me,” Gumede said.

“I’ve adjusted some things a bit but overall it has been amazing – I’m happy.

“I have settled in better than expected. Very good culture, a very good group and they are very welcoming.

“It actually doesn’t feel like I just joined the team.

“On and off the field, the standards are really high and it’s a very good working environment.”

Gumede said that Bulls Director of Rugby Jake White made the transfer really easy for him.

“In our chats, White told me I’m free to express myself and should not overthink or panic regarding the team’s style of play,” he conceded.

When asked about his ideal position the loose forward said: “I prefer playing No.8.

“However I don’t mind as long as I do what I love, but preferably No.8 because it makes me link with the backs easily.”

The 23-year-old revealed some positive news regarding the ankle strain.

“The swelling has come down. It is not that bad and hopefully, I can train by Thursday.”

The Bulls conclude their European tour this Friday against Edinburgh.
