Ireland stars come first as Snyman's contract details emerge

SPOTLIGHT: It seems that RG Snyman’s stay in Dublin will not be a very long one.

On Tuesday, Leinster announced that the double World Cup winner will be joining them from rivals Munster ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Leinster didn’t provide specific details on the contract, but according to reports he has only signed a one-season deal.

According to RugbyPass, there is a specific clause in his contract stating that he will only be able to play a certain percentage of United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup games for the province.

The deal is in place to ensure the progress of Leinster’s current crop of locks is not stultified.

Not only is captain James Ryan a lock, but Leinster also have other Ireland locks on their books.

Ryan Baird, 24, and Joe McCarthy, 22, are both Leinster regulars and Ireland internationals, and with their academy products also coming through, the deal will make sure Snyman is not depriving the players of game time.

Then again, if Snyman’s tenure at Munster is anything to go by, game time might not be that frequent with Leinster.

The 28-year-old has endured an injury-plagued stint in Munster, suffering multiple ACL ruptures, and is currently out of action after undergoing surgery for a shoulder/chest injury sustained in the World Cup Final.

Meanwhile, Snyman’s future teammate, Ireland international Caelan Doris, is looking forward to linking up with the Bok bruiser.

“I’ll just follow him around and let him get his arms free and put me in a bit of space. It would be nice,” Doris told Irish media.

“He’s had a pretty heavy injury period over the last while and hasn’t played much for Munster.

“But having seen what he can do with them and with the Springboks and playing No.19 [at the World Cup], again this year he’s been incredibly impressive and he’s an absolute physical specimen.

“And he has very good football skills – you hear from the Munster lads, as well as what you see in games, he’s a very good footballer and he’s skilful and capable of very good things.

“He will be a massive asset for sure.”
