Mapoe expects physical onslaught from Sharks
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Veteran Bulls centre Lionel Mapoe foresees that the match-up in midfield will probably be much more physical than last weekend when they face the Sharks in Durban in the United Rugby Championship on Saturday.
The experienced Mapoe said the Sharks, with players like Lukhanyo Am and Rohan Janse van Rensburg, the Bulls are expecting a more physical battle than the Stormers last weekend, whose backs play with more flair.
“The Sharks have both aspects, flair and physicality, but I expect the game to be much more physical and we have prepared for that. Last weekend we let ourselves and our fans down.
“When we let through those quick tries they scored, we weren’t switched on. This weekend we just have to be better,” Mapoe said.
Talking about the two weeks’ rest some of the players went through, Mapoe explained that it is important to manage the squad as the competition is long and there is also the Champions Cup to prepare for.
“That is where coach Jake [White] is so good at managing us, and especially the young guys. Should we reach the play-offs, we must all be ready to play. We play week in and week out, and that is why we have such a big group.
“That is my role as well. I have a broad role, I speak to the young guys and try to help motivate them.
“But the youngsters also inspire me. When I look at them, I think back to the time I was just as fast. Now I can help with advice where I can.”
When asked about his thoughts on the future of the Currie Cup, Mapoe said he felt that the local competition still had a role to play.
“It is still important to have the Currie Cup. It is a stepping stone for the young players who want to play in the bigger competitions one day. And there are so many.”
Comparing Super Rugby with the URC, Mapoe said in the days when South Africa took part in the former, the game was very physical and fast.
He felt countries like Ireland, Scotland and Wales bring a different dimension to the URC and it poses different challenges.
“The game these days is much more tactical while the aerial game now plays a huge role. There is no easy game in the URC.”
