VIDEO: Why Duhan will be getting 'special attention' from Bulls

SPOTLIGHT: Duhan van der Merwe is not like “every other wing” and that is why the Bulls will be keeping a close eye on him when they face Edinburgh

That was the view from Bulls utility back David Kriel ahead of Friday’s United Rugby Championship Round Five encounter in Scotland.

The South African-born Van der Merwe has established himself as one of the most feared wings in the game with his physical presence and speed out wide.

Edinburgh will boast several top internationals in their line-up on Friday and Kriel spoke about the threats his team will face.

“It mainly depends on the weather. A couple of the guys went to go watch their game against Connacht this past weekend. It wasn’t as wet as we thought it would be but it was very cold,” said Kriel.

“It was a very kick-dominated game and a lot of contestables.

“We are expecting a good kicking game from them, but they also got a couple of running threats in Duhan van der Merwe and Wes Goosen, so we will keep an eye on that.”

When asked if the Bulls will be giving Van der Merwe some special attention, Kriel said: “I think you have to.”

He added: “He is not like every other wing. He is big, he is strong, and he showed what he can do on the international stage.

“Duhan van der Merwe is a big threat that we have to keep an eye on.

“You can label it as ‘special attention’ but we will keep an eye on him.”

The perfect position

Meanwhile, Kriel, who has shown his versatility in the backline, is flourishing in the midfield this season as a No.12 or No.13.

“I am very happy with No.12, but I think any rugby player would play in any position when given the opportunity,” said the 24-year-old.

“I enjoy my rugby at centre – at No.12 or No.13. I feel like I am growing quite nicely in that position now.

“I am very happy with where my game is going at the moment.

“I have been covering a few positions. I am enjoying No.12 and No.13. I enjoyed playing No.13 against the Scarlets and also Ulster. I feel at home at centre and at the moment that is my preference.

“I am not the biggest No.12 out there. It’s about reflecting on my game and my strong points and maybe mine is not bashing over a guy but using my feet better.

“It’s all about knowing what type of player I am and what’s the weaknesses I should stay away from. It’s about me knowing what I am good at and working on that.”
