SPOTLIGHT: Stormers young gun Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu admitted his sporting career could have taken a different path at junior level.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of South African rugby’s brightest young talents over the last couple of seasons and he has been tipped by many to be a future Springbok flyhalf.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu has raised eyebrows with some of his performances in the Stormers jersey, including the win against the Lions in their United Rugby Championship opener this season.

The playmaker was the star of the show for the Stormers with two great tries in a 35-33 win. His first one was an example of some incredible football skills.

Therefore it came as no surprise when Feinberg-Mngomezulu said that the beautiful game was a big part of his development growing up.

“I definitely did take football seriously as an option,” said Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“I would take the drives to the training sessions and trials, but being surrounded by schoolboys playing rugby at Bishops and quite a rugby-dominant culture, that was the side I leaned towards.”

Meanwhile, the young gun knows who he will pick for a five-a-side football team from the current Stormers squad.

“I am going with Hacjivah [Dayimani], then Ruben van Heerden in goal.

“Give me Ben Loader and Dan du Plessis in the midfield and myself.”

Feinberg-Mngomezulu has been on the sidelines recently with a stress fracture in his ankle, but he revealed that he is set to return to action during a crucial stage of the season.

“The injury rehab has been good, it has been shorter than usual and it has been great working with the strength and conditioning staff to make sure my body is fully prepared and built-proofed for what is going to be the most important part of the season,” he said.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu recently signed a new deal with the Stormers which will see him stay in Cape Town for another three years.

“I am a Stormers man at heart and just the experiences that I have had over the past couple of seasons and watching the progress of the team says enough about where we are going,” he said.

“I want to be part of the building of an empire here.”
