URC Final: Key head-to-heads

It has come down to Friday’s URC Final face-off at Páirc an Chrócaigh in Dublin.

The Bulls make the trip to Dublin to face defending URC champions Leinster in a rematch of last year’s Final.

Leinster is considered the ‘heavy favourites’, and some pundits suggest the undisputed benchmark of the competition, yet former players emphasise that the Bulls are capable of an upset.

The consensus is that the Bulls’ brutal forward pack, set-piece dominance, and late-game bench depth make them incredibly dangerous.

Two legends, Isa Nacewa and Victor Matfield, sat down to unpack some of the key battles in Croke Park.

Nacewa, who, over two spells with Leinster, won four European Cups and captained the team to a Champions Cup and Pro14 double in his final season, said he is not prone to making predictions about forwards.

The 43-year-old, who kicked the match-winning penalty in Leinster’s 15–12 victory over Racing 92, in the Champions Cup Final in May 2018, for a record-equalling fourth win as a player in the competition, was happy to assess the key backline battle in the Final.

Fullbacks Willie le Roux (Bulls) and Hugo Keenan (Leinster) headline his key battles.

“There will be a bit of kicking in this game,” Nacewa said on a media round table, adding: “There will be a lot of field cover needed by both teams.

“They are both stand-out, world-class players, but for me, the fullback battle is key.

“It is not just the flat stuff [kicking], but also some key tactical decisions needed by both these players.

“They are world-class and top of their game. Willie [le Roux] oozes class and always has.

“When he is on, every team has to watch out.

“I would be very intrigued to see how that battle plays out.”

Matfield, who won three Super Rugby titles with the Bulls and a World Cup with the Springboks, headlined the scrumhalves.

“[Jamison] Gibson-Park is the heart of the Leinster attack,” the Bok legend said, adding: “Embrose Papier has been outstanding.

“Hopefully, he gets a good run with the Springboks this year.

“[Bok coach] Rassie [Erasmus] has some quality No.9s in his squad, but he [Papier] has been outstanding on attack.

“His kicking game is spot-on, especially the contestable kicks.”

Matfield also listed the midfield battle, where Garry Ringrose (Ireland Test star) or All Black Rieko Ioane will start for Leinster against Springbok Canan Moodie.

“Moodie is an up-and-coming star, and I do enjoy him at No.13. That will be his position going forward with the Boks as well.

“It will be a great test for him against this Leinster attack, and you need a No.13 that makes good decisions [on defence].”

Leinster v Bulls head-to-head

This is Leinster’s 13th URC/Pro14/12 Final, where their record is eight victories and four defeats.

Their only defeat in their last eight appearances in the Final was 10-20 to Connacht at Murrayfield in 2016.

Leinster’s 32-7 victory over the Bulls last season is the largest winning margin in a URC Final.

The Irishmen’s only defeat in their last six fixtures was the 19-41 reversal to Bordeaux Begles in the European Cup Final.

Leinster has played six matches at Croke Park, including last season’s Final, with their only defeat coming in their most recent visit, 14-31 against Munster in Round Four.

This is the Bulls’ fourth Final appearance across the five URC seasons, although they are yet to taste victory, losing to Stormers in 2022, Glasgow in 2024 and to Leinster twelve months ago.

The Bulls do have a pedigree when it comes to Finals, winning all three of their Super Rugby Finals in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

Bulls have won their last eight URC fixtures since they were defeated by the Stormers in March.

The Bulls have visited Ireland on 12 occasions, winning four times.

No other South African team have more than two victories in Ireland.

The two sides have met in three previous play-off fixtures, with the Bulls holding the edge by two wins to one courtesy of semifinal victories in 2022 and 2024.
