Afslaan bounce back

Afslaan managed a convincing win over Kanniedood in Monday night’s Steinhoff Koshuis League action at the University of Johannesburg, while the boys from Bastion remained undefeated in the first division.

The Men from Afslaan ran in an impressive eight tries in their 46-5 win over Kanniedood.

The Afslaan backs, with Thys Taljaard back at flyhalf, created havoc whenever they got clean ball and scored five of their team’s tries.

Kanniedood’s forwards seemed to have the upper-hand with their driving mauls, but they could not manage to convert the pressure into points. They scored their only try of the match with ten minutes left on the clock.

Afslaan’s Gerhard van der Ryst told varsitycup.co.za that “our guys were very positive and played well on Monday. We were glad Thys (Taljaard) played again as he made a huge difference in the backline”.

Inside centre, Zama Myeni, scored three tries and was deservedly named Man of the Match for his efforts.

In another physical encounter, Bastion beat ‘Drom’ 17-9. Bastion’s team ar playing impressive rugby – and it is difficult to imagine that this team could be on the losing side this year.

In the second division, UJ’s Under-19B-team managed to run in seven tries in their 47-0 win against Majuba.

Wednesday marked the start of week seven in UJ’s Steinhoff Koshuis League and Bastion will look to boost their points’ difference margin when they face Kanniedood, and ‘Drom’ face Oppierif, who had a bye on Monday night.

In the second division, ‘Drom’ will take on Afslaan with both teams wanting to earn valuable points on the log to close the gap on Bastion. The skilful Chiropractors face Kanniedood in the other match of the night.
