Bastion in pole position
Both of Bastion’s teams faced Afslaan in Monday night’s Steinhoff Koshuis League matches at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
Of course, these matches were postponed due to both residences’ ‘Feesweek’ parties that took place last week – but there was double joy for Bastion this week; their second team won 50-0 and the first team managed a similarly comfortable 34-3 victory.
According to team manager Francois Conradie, both Bastion teams “played pretty well” and they were understandably happy with the results on the night.
“The second team won because of their good overall play and an all-round team effort. Our forwards and backs combined brilliantly,” Conradie told varsitycup.co.za.
Bastion loose forward Ignus Potgieter once again played like a beast and was deservedly named Man of the Match in the first team.
Conradie added that “our forwards dominated the set-pieces and laid the foundation for the backs to round off”.
Bastion’s first team now tops the log after the first round of matches in the First Division.
“We’re feeling good ahead of the second round,” said Conradie. “Our toughest match is next week against Drom, and if we can win them again we have a good chance to take it.”
In other news, Vorendag’s team has been fined because of their ‘no-show’ against the Chiropractors.
This week’s Steinhoff Koshuis League matches have also been moved due to the University of Johannesburg’s annual ‘Sangfees’ competition taking place this week. These matches have been moved to Monday night – but the league will commence as per normal next Wednesday.
