Bastion still unbeaten in Jo'burg
Dromedaris and Bastion played quality rugby on Wednesday night in UJ’s Steinhoff Koshuis League, with both sides recording huge victories – Dromedaris won 26-5 against Afslaan and Bastion beat Oppierif 41-0.
‘Drom’ were a bit rusty in the first half, and Afslaan managed to keep them at bay to trail by just two points at half-time (7-5). The second half was another story though and ‘Drom’ moved into a higher gear.
Afterwards, ‘Drom’s Etienne le Roux told varsitycup.co.za: “The guys played better in the second half to convert pressure into points.”
Afslaan’s Gerhard van der Ryst lamented: “Our fitness let us down the last 20 minutes last night, which gave ‘Drom’ the opportunity to score three late tries.”
Bastion, meanwhile, scored seven tries in their match against Oppierif and a delighted Francois Conradie told varsitycup.co.za: “Our forwards dominated both the loose and tight phases.
“This meant that the backline got good ball to convert possession into tries.”
Bastion’s team turned in a good all round performance, but the excellent play by their loose forwards laid the foundation for a good win.
Loose forward Conradie was deservedly named Man of the Match.
In the second division, Dromedaris managed to withstand a late comeback from an upbeat Kanniedood side. ‘Drom’ won the match 29-18 after scoring four quick tries in the first half to lead by 22-6 at half-time.
A try in the ninth minute of the second half was ‘Drom’s’ last points, however. Kanniedood’s forwards then started to play more physically and kept the ball close, but their two tries were just not good enough in the end.
A weakened Bastion team had a closer encounter though when they met the Chiropractors. It was a tight encounter, but a drop-goal in the second half by inside centre Anton van Niewenhuyzen sealed the match for Bastion to win 8-6.
In the other matches, UJ’s Rugby Factory beat Majuba 69-0 and Afslaan and DFC played a Sevens match, which DFC won 67-31.
In Week Seven, Dromedaris beat Oppierif by 52-0, while Bastion managed to score eight tries against Kanniedood to win 52-6.
In the second division the Chiropractors defeated Kanniedood 21-12; Bastion beat Majuba 41-8, while UJ’s Rugby Factory and U19B finished in a 7-7 draw.
