'Drom' hunting title, unbeaten record

Dromedaris, the University of Johannesburg’s all-conquering koshuis team, would love nothing more than winning the 2009 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships and thereby finishing the season unbeaten.

Standing in their way at the Danie Craven Stadium on Monday, however, are Shimlas’ Huis Armentum – like ‘Drom’, the only unbeaten side in their division of the 2009 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Champs.

“The guys are very excited to play in the final (against Huis Armentum). The fact that the game is televised on SuperSport has a huge impact and the guys can’t wait to get out on the field,” ‘Drom’ scrumhalf Matilda Jacobsz told varsitycup.co.za.

“We are the only uneaten teams in the league, but I think Armentum are the favourites (to win the match),” added Jacobsz.

“We like the fact that we’re the underdogs though. We’ve noticed that all their games were high-scoring affairs and accept the fact that they like to play an expansive game. We thus had to adapt our defensive structures a bit this week, but, other than that, no major changes were made at training.”

‘Drom’ have not announced their starting XV yet, but Conzales Mecuur is set to return from injury and thereby take his place on the right-wing. In that case, Remskoen Daniel would then drop down to the bench.

The Men from ‘Drom’ played all their league matches in the Johannesburg area this past season, but Jacobsz added that his teammates were “really looking forward to travelling a bit and playing an away game”.

Dromedaris will have their captain’s practice on Sunday before they leave for Cape Town on Monday morning. The final ‘Drom’ starting line-up will be confirmed on Sunday.

The Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships Final – which gets underway at 4.45pm – will serve as the curtain-raiser to the Varsity Cup Final between Maties and Pukke in Stellenbosch on Monday, March 30.
