Dromedaris win again

The Men from the University of Johannesburg, Dromedaris, remained unbeaten in the 2009 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships – after convincingly beating Maroela from Tuks 30-15 on Saturday.

Dromedaris scored three converted tries, as well as two penalties and a drop-goal, while the visitors could had just five penalties to show for their efforts.

“Our defence was very good but stupid mistakes and ill-discipline in our half of the field gave them the opportunity to stay in the game,” Matilda Jacobsz told varsitycup.co.za.

“But we were in control of the match from the beginning and we’re obviously very happy with the win.”

Dromedaris started the match well and scored the first points when Moomin Petla dived over for a try. Conraad ‘Hamlet’ Janse van Rensburg converted the try and kicked a penalty minutes later.

Janse van Rensburg then scored a try of his own and converted it for Drom to lead by 11 points going into the break. Maroela could manage only two penalties and the score at half-time was 17-6 in favour of the UJ side.

Maroela kicked another three penalties in the beginning of the second half, but Janse van Rensburg replied with a penalty and a drop-goal.

Jacobsz added: “The turning point in the match was when Hamlet kicked the drop-goal. We were eight points clear and Maroela were then under pressure to at least score some points to stay in it.”

Maroela were fiercely attacking the Dromedaris tryline when the ball popped loose for Daneel ‘Babaganoosh’ Ellis to pick it up and score a long-distance try – putting the result beyond doubt.

“That was the final nail in the coffin,” commented Jacobsz, who added that their Man of the Match was “definitely” their flyhalf Jacques Botes.
