Koshuis champions show their class

Steinhoff Koshuisrugby champions Armentum on Friday grabbed a crucial 34-15 win over the University of the Free State Under-19 team in the Kovsies Steinhoff Koshuisliga.

In the process, Armentum achieved something no other hostel team could do over the past two years; to beat the strong FS U19 team.

Only Vishuis come close last term but still went down 42-46.

With this bonus point-victory Armentum clearly showed that they are going to be a much tougher opposition as was the case last term when they won just one out of four games.

This was also the U19s last encounter in the competition. The majority of the team will now play for the Free State U19s in the national competition.

The UFS team had quite a few chances to open their account on a cold Friday night, but flyhalf Francois de Wet had a torrid time with the boot, missing plenty of opportunities at goal.

Armentum’s flyhalf Stefan Terblanché, on the other hand, kicked two penalties and converted Jonker Venter’s (prop) try for an 18-0 lead.

The youngsters had a golden opportunity to score early on, but had to wait until shortly before half-time to open their account with a try through lock Juran Jonck.

Armentum scored two more tries in the second half and never looked in danger of losing the match.

Wing Gareth Lourens secured the much needed bonus-point in the final minutes for a comprehensive win for the 2009 Koshuis champs.

Scorers: Armentum 34 (18), UFS U19 15 (5). ARMENTUM – Tries: Niekie Potgieter, Jonker Venter, Mynhardt van der Walt, Gareth Lourens. Conversion: Stefan Terblanché. Penalties: Terblanché 4. FS 19 – Tries: Juran Jonck, John Henry Harris, Dirk Wessels.

* Vishuis easily defeated Veritas (32-12) to go to the top of the log. They went past Heimat – who had a bye last week – on the overall standings.

Scorers: Vishuis 32 (24), Veritas 12 (0). VISHUIS – Tries: Ulrich Carshagen, Gerhard Meyer, Johan Bruno, Dries Ludeke, Waldo Krogh. Conversions: Cobus van der Westhuizen 2. Penalty: Van der Westhuizen. VERITAS – Tries: Richard Smit, Gerrit Smits. Conversion: Charl Schultz.

* In spite of a good comeback by JBM, Karee recorded their first win in the competition with a 25-17 win against all odds. JBM was the form side towards the end of last term.

But they trailed 5-25 at half-time and even though they scored two tries by wing Jean Goosen, and didn’t concede any more points, it wasn’t enough to reduce the deficit in the end.

Scorers: Karee 25 (25), JBM 17 (5). KAREE – Tries: Kalander le Roux, Nico Venter, Frans Smit. Conversions: Danie Schoeman 2. Penalties: Schoeman 2.
JBM – Tries: Jean Goosen 2, Roelof Joubert. Conversion: Joubert.
