Nadoes tame the Lions in warm-up
The Steinhoff Tornadoes opened their 2010 pre-season with a win against Magic Lions.
The newly-recruited Tornadoes squad, made up solely of University of Cape Town students, were out to prove a point to all their rivals as they ran out 42-14 winners in this 2010 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships warm-up fixture.
Starting like a proverbial house on fire, the Tornadoes ran in two tries within nothing less than seven minutes, with Damian ‘Dutchie’ Stander the provider for both tries. Some good work in the middle of the park gave Stander a chance to break and break he did – rounding two Lions players before handing off in the tackle.
Matthew Russell, a former UCT first team player, was another star performer on the day with his excellent passing and witty changes in play as he often switched the plays from the left to the right which gave the Lions plenty to think about. On top of that, Russell also scored 18 points via his trusty boot.
The Tornadoes, looking to give everybody a run, made the allotted eight substitutions as they brought on their big guns. That said, the Magic Lions came at the Nadoes in the second half, but the 2010 Koshuis team’s defence stood strong. In fact, the manner in which the Tornadoes started and finished the game, you can surely see they mean business this season.
The Nadoes play their first Steinhoff Koshuis match against the NMMU Madibaz on Monday, February 22 at the Green Mile.
With home-ground advantage, the Tornadoes seem firm favourites to win this encounter and, hopefully, take a step in the right direction towards a possible Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Champs semifinal.
