'Overs' by no means over
Pukke’s contestants in the 2009 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships, Over de Voor, are oozing with confidence – especially after their 34-18 victory over Monitor (from TUT) on Monday afternoon in Pretoria.
Monitor proved to be tough opponents in the first half, keeping ‘Overs’ to just a slender two-point lead (15-13) at half-time, but the superior fitness of the Potch team pulled them through in the second half – as they ran in a total of five tries.
Three of those tries were converted by Morné Archer, who also landed a penalty goal. ‘Overs’ try-scorers were Johan Breugam, Marius Matthee, Delarey du Preez, Giepie van der Merwe and Ryno Loots.
‘Overs’ lost 10-26 to Maroela (Tuks) in the first round of the Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships, but their win over Monitor sees them in second place on the Northern section log – one point (and position) ahead of Maroela (Tuks) with one more round of league action remaining.
Next up for Over de Voor are Dromedaris – from UJ – as a curtain-raiser to next Monday’s crucial Varsity Cup clash between the NWU-Pukke and UCT in Potchefstroom.
‘Overs’ coach Wilbur Kraak – a very experienced provincial referee, who is currently on the Golden Lions’ top 10 panel – is confident that his team can still end top of the log.
“To do that we must beat Dromedaris with a bonus point,” he told varsitycup.co.za, adding: “There is a huge surprise element in the Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships. In the local league you know what to expect from your opponents.”
Kraak is hoping for a full-house at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds on Monday – kick-off 2.50pm.
