Vishuis in dramatic win over champs

In a dramatic match in the Steinhoff Kovsies Koshuisliga, Vishuis recorded their first win of the season when they defeated Huis Armentum 28-27 on Friday night.

Vishuis scored the winning try in the very last minute in a nail-biting match against the 2009 Steinhoff Koshuisrugby champions.

After some slick handling on Armentum’s line, Vishuis centre Johan Bruno went over in the right-hand corner for his second score of the evening – much to the delight of the Vishuis supporters who come charging onto the field at the final whistle!

What made this fixture even more remarkable is that Vishuis led 23-0 at half-time, but then could not score a single point until the 80th minute.

Armentum struggled to get their hands on the ball in the first half as Vishuis dominated play, but a great fightback in the second half (in which they scored 27 unanswered points) was simply not enough as Vishuis seemed the hungrier of the two sides.

Point scorers: Vishuis 28 (23), Armentum 27 (0). VISHUIS – Tries: Johan Bruno 2, Dries Ludike, Carl du Toit. Conversions: Cobus van der Westhuizen. Penalties: Van der Westhuizen 2. ARMENTUM – Tries: Morkel Hoffman 2, Johnny Schoeman. Conversions: Stefan Terblanché 3. Penalties: Terblanché 2.

In an exciting match, Heimat got the better of Karee and in the process jumped to a six-point lead on the log.

Although Karee were still in the mix at half-time (3-12) a blitzkrieg of four unanswered tries blew them away – the Heimat backline was simply too good on the night.

Scrumhalf Danie Schoeman had a good evening for Karee behind a strong forward pack and his massive 50-metre kick at goal will long be remembered by the Karee supporters.

Point scorers: Heimat 34 (12), Karee 11 (3). HEIMAT – Tries: Daniël Krynauw, JP du Plessis, Pieter van der Berg, Danie le Roux. Conversion: Mindus Crous. Penalties: Crous 4.
KAREE – Try: Alec McKenzie. Penalties: Danie Schoeman 2.

For the second week in a row, the University’s Under-19 team had to fight hard for their win after trailing in the second half.

On Saturday they emerged as winners over JBM Hertzog, who led 13-7 at the break. Dawid van der Vyfer, flyhalf, scored all JBM’s points in the first period.

Point scorers: UFS U19 36 (7), JBM 13 (13). UFS U19 – Tries: Robert van Schalkwyk, Barend Landman, Jumba Ulenga, AJ Coertze, Leroy Abrahams 2. Conversions: Rian du Toit, Eric Colyn 2. JBM – Try: Dawid van der Vyver. Conversion: Van der Vyver. Penalties: Van der Vyver 2.
