Crushing wins for Maties, Ikeys

The Western Cape’s Varsity Cup representatives, the Maties and the Ikey Tigers, both recorded big victories in Western Province Super League action on Friday.

FNB Maties, the current Varsity Cup and Super League champions, put Kraaifontein to the sword – beating them 67-0, whilst the Ikey Tigers beat Helderberg (away) 50-14.

The Maties remain unbeaten in the 2009 WP Super League, having also beaten Victorians 20-16, Villagers 49-17 and NNK 19-9 this season.

FNB UCT, meanwhile, have lost once this season – claiming three wins from four starts in all; beating ‘Durbell’ 29-8, Villagers 26-7 and, now, Helderberg 50-14. Their only defeat was to Vics, 20-39.

Of course, Stellenbosch and UCT – the Varsity Cup finalists in 2008 – will meet in an Intervarsity clash at Newlands next Saturday afternoon (kick-off 4pm).

Their match, a Super League fixture, will also serve as a curtain-raiser to the Stormers-Force Super 14 clash.
