Maties' Buhle named on WP bench

Stellenbosch Varsity Cup star Buhle Mxunyelwa has been elevated to Western Province’s Currie Cup bench for Saturday’s mouth-watering clash against Griquas in Kimberley – a fixture which is turning into something of a Varsity Cup all-stars affair.

Mxunyelwa, a former Border Bulldogs player, made a name for himself during the 2010 Varsity Cup as Maties’ front row ‘super-sub’ and will now have the chance to add to his WP Vodacom Cup appearances.

The mobile forward will be joined on the bench by fellow Maties Varsity Cup aces, De Kock Steenkamp and Conrad Hoffmann, whilst UCT star Nick Köster – who missed the 2010 Varsity Cup because of injury – will also be amongst the replacements.

In the backline, meanwhile, Maties centres Juan de Jongh and Paul Bosch are also Varsity Cup products, whilst Griquas replacements Michael Passaportis and Matthew Rosslee are both UCT Old Boys.

The Western Province team: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Gio Aplon, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Paul Bosch, 11 Frikkie Welsh, 10 Willem de Waal, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Pieter Louw, 5 Anton van Zyl (captain), 4 Adriaan Fondse, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 JD Moller.
Replacements: 16 Deon Fourie, 17 Wicus Blaauw, 18 Buhle Mxunyelwa, 19 De Kock Steenkamp, 20 Nick Köster, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Lionel Cronjé.

Kick-off: 3pm
