Peverett still not ready for action
Back-to-back Varsity Cup champions, the FNB Maties, will be without injured captain Cameron Peverett when they host the TUT Vikings in a Round Two FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International fixture in Stellenbosch this coming Monday.
Peverett – who has taken over as captain from Wesley Wilkins – missed the defending champions’ 68-20 opening-round victory over NMMU this past Monday, but he has still not recovered from his rib injury and will thus not be available for selection against the Vikings.
“He’s still struggling,” Maties head coach Chean Roux told varsitycup.co.za, “we won’t risk him against TUT.
“Jonathan Adendorf is available again, however, which is a boost for us. He was initially not fit enough to be considered for Paul Treu’s Sevens team, but he has now recovered from his injury and Paul gave me permission to pick him.”
Tighthead prop Lourens Adriaanse will lead the Maties into battle once again and Roux added: “In his own way, Lourens has a huge following in the team. He doesn’t say much, but when he speaks the guys certainly listen!”
Roux, meanwhile, revealed that he would be making “quite a few changes” for the TUT game (kick-off 7.30pm).
He added: “I’m certainly not suddenly getting over-confident, but I will be losing some guys to Vodacom Cup duty pretty soon, so I need to keep my entire squad fresh and, also, see what I have available to me in terms of selection.
“TUT won’t be pushovers, of that I’m certain, but I will rotate my squad a bit and look to give everyone some decent game time.”
