Rampant Maties blow False Bay away

The Men in Maroon, the FNB Maties, were in no mood for charity on Friday night in their WP Super League encounter against False Bay.

Having gone down 18-19 to the Bay in the first half of the league, back in May, Stellenbosch were always going to be fired-up for the return encounter which they won 55-14 on Friday.

The home side, playing – as per normal – at the Danie Craven Stadium in Coetzenberg, scored nine tries to two; more than doubling their half-time score of 26-7 in the second forty minutes.

Winger Louw Schabort scored a hat-trick of tries, with scrumhalf Johan Herbst grabbing a try double.

Flyhalf Coenie van Wyk – who played at No.10 for the Maties during the 2009 Varsity Cup Final triumph over the Pukke – slotted five conversions, and also enjoyed a strong game in the crucial No.10 position in tandem with his No.9, Herbst.

FNB Maties’ scorers:
Tries:
Schabort 3, Herbst 2, Stoffberg, Van Zyl, Laker, Van Wyk
Cons: Van Wyk 5
