Ruthless Maties win Cape Derby

FNB Maties finished their 2009 WP Super League season on a high by beating UCT’s Ikey Tigers 36-13 at Groote Schuur on Friday night.

UCT, ravaged by injuries and Provincial call-ups, took the lead early on through a Matt Rosslee penalty goal, but the visitors – boasting the likes of JD Moller, Conrad Hoffmann and Paul Bosch in their ranks – were simply too good on the night.

Hoffmann, playing at flyhalf at the request of the Western Province coaching staff, showed great footwork and speed off the mark to score his team’s opening try and from 7-3 up the back-to-back Varsity Cup champions never looked back.

Stellenbosch finished second on the WP Super League log and UCT ended third, with new WP champions, Hamilton’s – of course – set to play in the 2009 Club Champs Final against Varsity Cup team, Pukke, on Saturday.
