Varsity Cup recruits bolster Boland
A host of past and present Varsity Cup players have been named in an experimental Boland Cavaliers squad for this weekend’s Currie Cup friendly against the Mighty Elephants in Port Elizabeth.
2008 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International campaigners, Jacobie Adriaanse (Maties, prop), Danie van der Merwe (UCT, scrumhalf), are both in the 25-man squad, along with Johan Roets and Grant le Roux – both of whom played in the 2008 and 2009 Varsity Cups.
Le Roux – a stalwart at lock for the Pukke – recently signed a two-year deal with Boland, whilst Roets (pictured) is a double Varsity Cup-winning Maties prop. Both of them played in the 2009 final in Stellenbosch.
Hooker Clemen Lewis will lead Boland into battle this weekend, with Adriaanse the only Varsity Cup player in the starting line-up.
But Roets, Le Roux and Van der Merwe can all be expected to get plenty of game time this Friday evening… and, no doubt, this season.
The Boland team: 15 Justin Peach, 14 Deon Scholtz, 13 Cornal Hendricks, 12 Dewey Swartbooi, 11 Lovu Sogidashe, 10 Algar Watts, 9 Marnus Hugo, 8 Junior Bester, 7 Wendell Wehr, 6 Zolani Mofu, 5 Rito Hlungwane, 4 Frikkie Spies, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Clemen Lewis (captain), 1 Janro van Niekerk.
Replacements (from): Conrad Burke, Jané du Toit, Johan Roets, Grant le Roux, David Hendricks, Angelo Brinkhuys, Danie van der Merwe, Hein Myburgh, Mark Harris, Ernie Kruger.
