Determined UJ put one over Pukke
The University of Johannesburg upset the form book in Grand Challenge action this week, beating Varsity Cup finalists, the Pukke, 25-20 in a hard-fought match on Thursday night.
UJ winger Trekker van Tonder was the hero for his side, his two tries – along with one from wing partner Wigan Pekeur – helping the visitors claim a deserved three-tries-to-two victory.
Arno Coetzee converted two tries and slotted a penalty and a drop-goal to also boost UJ’s tally against a Pukke side which mustered two converted tries and two penalties in return.
Pukke, after narrowly losing the 2009 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International Final to Stellenbosch last month, have been in good form in the Grand Challenge thus far, but UJ are currently riding on the crest of a wave after their superb Melrose Sevens triumph a few short weeks ago.
