Ikey Tigers bounce back strongly
FNB UCT bounced back from last weekend’s home loss to ‘Durbel’ with a 34-17 bonus point win over Helderberg on Friday evening.
The Cape Town-based students scored five tries on a typically windy night at the Green Mile, with debutant No.8 Sam Peter grabbing two scores and backs Rob Hopwood, Justin Bijl and Therlow Pietersen also amongst the try-scorers.
Flyhalf Doug Mallett – the son of former Springbok coach Nick – kicked three conversions and one penalty goal. Mallett, who is still Under-20, started the game at No.10 with SA Universities star Matt Rosslee at inside centre.
Veteran back Dave Edgar made a welcome return from injury for UCT at outside centre, as did Marcello Sampson (wing) and scrumhalf Stu Commins as the Ikeys claimed the valuable four-try bonus point after leading 24-10 at half-time.
The Tigers have a midweek WP Super League fixture against Kraaifontein (on Wednesday night), before travelling down the road for their Southern Suburbs derby clash against Villager’s on Saturday.
