Ikeys-Kraaifontein match postponed

Saturday’s Western Province Super League match between UCT and Kraaifontein – at the Green Mile – has been postponed due to the severe weather conditions expected in the Mother City.

Weather conditions in Cape Town have been extremely poor since Thursday and with more bad conditions on the cards for the weekend, the call was made – and rightly so – to postpone all fixtures at UCT this weekend.

Aside from the safety of the players, the fields at UCT – which are hardly in the best of nick at present – would also have taken a fearful beating had these fixtures gone ahead.

“It’s been raining quite a lot already and according to the Weather Bureau we’re in for one helluva storm on Saturday,” Ikey Tigers head coach John Dobson told varsitycup.co.za.

“Although it would’ve been great for the guys to have a run-around against Kraaifontein this weekend, sanity has prevailed and a timeous call has been made to protect the players’ safety.

“There was no point in getting everyone down to the ground on Saturday – only to call the match off,” added Dobson, “so it’s quite nice to give the guys an extra day off; allowing them to switch off for the weekend and prepare for next week.”

Dobson had made a few enforced changes to his line-up after last week’s 16-16 Intervarsity draw against the Maties at Newlands, with inside centre Tim Whitehead and loosehead prop Dylan Rogers – both of whom are injured – dropping out of the 22.

Powerhouse Sean van Tonder (pictured) was set to start in the No.12 shirt to cover for Whitehead, with Wynberg Old Boy Ashley Wells coming on to the bench for Rogers.

UCT have lost just one match in the 2009 WP Super League thus far and are currently in third place on the log, whereas Kraaifontein are winless from four matches and propping up the standings with just one point to show for their efforts thus far.

The UCT team (for postponed match v Kraaifontein): 15 Therlow Pietersen, 14 Pieter Engelbrecht, 13 Dave Edgar, 12 Sean van Tonder, 11 Marcello Sampson, 10 Matthew Rosslee, 9 Jean-Paul Robert, 8 Nick Fenton-Wells, 7 Craig Kleu, 6 Jonathan Gagiano, 5 Bodo Sieber (captain), 4 Michael Passaportis, 3 Herbert Mayosi, 2 Mark Goosen, 1 Vakai Hove.
Replacements: 16 Dayne Jans, 17 Ashley Wells, 18 Don Armand, 19 Dane Galley, 20 Ian Armstrong, 21 Ollie Braithwaite, 22 Pete Haw.

Head coach: John Dobson
Assistant coach: Robbie Fleck
