Ikeys prop to join the Griquas 'party'

UCT prop Dylan Rogers has been offered a contract by Currie Cup Premier Division outfit, Griquas, ahead of the 2010 Vodacom Cup season.

Rogers was a key man for the Ikey Tigers in their 2008 and 2009 Varsity Cup campaigns, playing at tighthead last year and starting in the No.1 shirt this past season.

A hard-working and mobile prop, Rogers – of course – also offers tremendous utility value and will be a welcome addition to Griquas’ playing ranks in 2010.

But Rogers – who is too old to play in the 2010 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International – will not be the only former Varsity Cup representative playing his rugby in Kimberley next season.

Already this year the likes of Jaco Nepgen (lock), Wesley Wilkins (flank) and Donald Stevens (scrumhalf) – all of whom starred for the 2009 Varsity Cup-winning Maties team – were based in Kimberley, whilst they will soon be joined by Rogers and star Stellenbosch flyhalf Coenie van Wyk next season.

Speaking to uctrfc.co.za, Rogers said: “The opportunity to join Griquas came out of the blue, but it was simply too good (an opportunity) for me to pass up.”

Rogers has been contracted until May 2010, but his contract could be extended if he impresses during the Vodacom Cup.

Griquas are the defending Vodacom Cup champions and also came within a whisker of qualifying for the Currie Cup semifinals – narrowly missing out on fourth place because of an inferior points difference to the Cheetahs.
