In-form Shimlas win - big!
Jaco Swanepoel’s FNB Shimlas side romped to a 90-3 win over Collegians in ‘Stadsbeker’ action in Bloemfontein on Wednesday evening, despite leading by just 24-3 at half-time.
In the process, Shimlas – who beat Collegians 71-5 last year – retained their unbeaten status in the 2009 ‘Stadsbeker’, having also recorded wins over Ixias (24-6) and Irawas (38-30) thus far.
Collegians, meanwhile, have yet to taste victory this season – losing to Bloemfontein Police and Crusaders, two sides they should really have beaten.
In all, Shimlas scored a whopping 14 tries, with flanker Paul Roux scoring a staggering four on his own.
Outside centre Cameron Jacobs grabbed a hat-trick and fullback Llewellyn Adonis chipped in with a double, whilst Earl Snyman, Beast Ndwandwa, Arné Grobbelaar, Frank Herne and Roelof Steyn also crossed the whitewash for the visitors.
Flyhalf Lionel Cronjé (pictured, right) slotted 10 conversions, but he also impressed in general play – the flyhalf and No.13 Jacobs the best Shimlas backs on offer, despite the efforts of Collegians midfielder Louis Pulzone.
No.6 Roux was the obvious standout up front, but the entire Shimlas loose trio of Roux, No.8 Arné Grobbelaar and No.7 Phillip van der Walt were on fire on the night and the home side had no answer to their pace, power and superior handling skills.
