However, their lead would not last long when Remu Malan scored a nine-point try to give his team the lead before the ten-minute mark.

Eight minutes later, Maties were awarded a penalty try after a driving maul close to the Shimlas tryline.

The Stellenbosch side found themselves further in front when wing Edwill van der Merwe crossed over for try to give his team a 21-7 lead.

Just when Maties thought they had the game by the scruff of the neck, centre Arthur Williams got his team's second try. De Wet converted with the score reading 21-14 in favour of Maties going into the break.

Maties then turned on the gas at the start of the second half with flyhalf Ernst Stapelberg scoring and converting his own try to give his team a 28-14 lead.

There would be no scoring until the last five minutes when Maties No.8 Kobus van Wyk put the game to bed.
