More than just silverware at stake

There is plenty at stake for both teams during Monday’s 2009 Varsity Cup Final between FNB Maties and FNB Pukke in Stellenbosch, but even more to gain for those not involved in the final!

Not only will the official FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International awards be made (Player of the Tournament, Forward and Back of the Tournament), but there will be live music on offer, competition winners announced and beautiful women present, too.

What more do we need, hey?!

Popular singer Kurt Darren will perform live at the Danie Craven during, before and after the final – which kicks-off at 6.45pm – whilst the ace musician will also reveal which tune was voted the official Song of the 2009 Varsity Cup. Voting was done on the official Varsity Cup website throughout the tournament.

The winner of the Pharmaton, ‘Win a Harley Davidson’, competition will also be announced on Monday evening after a fantastic response yet again on the official Varsity Cup website. All readers had to do was send in a text file, a photo or a video clip about themselves and the Varsity Cup; with some truly brilliant entries winging their way to the Varsity Cup Head Office.

The lucky winner in this Pharmaton-sponsored competition will walk off, or rather ride off, with a brand-new Harley Davidson Sportster – worth over R100,000!

Last year’s players’ awards went to Stellenbosch’s Sarel Potgieter (Player of the Tournament) and UCT’s Herbie Mayosi (Forward of the Tournament) and James Martin (Back of the Tournament), but this year there a host of players vying for those coveted titles.

Maties scrumhalf Donald Stevens is the leading points-scorer in the 2009 Varsity Cup, with 102 points and he will come into contention somewhere. So too will UCT star Therlow Pietersen – the leading try-scorer, with six – and also inspirational Pukke captain and No.8 Willem van der Wal, the heartbeat of the Potchefstroom-based team.

Of course, those stunning prizes and awards side, the first-ever Miss Varsity Cup will also be announced at the Danie Craven on Monday.

Each of the eight competing universities had to ‘produce’ their own representative during the Varsity Cup, with all eight lovelies being voted for on the official VC website. Those final results will be released on Monday and one gorgeous lady will be crowned as Miss Varsity Cup, 2009!

There are many contenders, and too many to get into here, but make sure you stay glued to Monday’s final to see who walks off with the title, the fantastic prizes on offer and the ultimate university bragging rights.

* If the 2009 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International Final between Maties and Pukke ends in a draw after regulation time, extra-time will be played.

Extra-time regulations:
– Twenty minutes of extra-time will be played – ten minutes each half, with one minute for half-time in between.

– If the scores are still equal at the conclusion of extra-time, a ‘kick-out’ will be held.

– In the ‘kick-out’, each team chooses five players to place-kick from a designated point on the field as instructed by the Tournament Director, or referee. If the scores are still equal at that point; the kicks will then be done on a sudden-death basis.

– These sudden-death kicks must be taken by other players than the five that have already kicked. Thus a player can kick one kick only in the ‘kick-out’.
