Nervy Ikeys steal win at the death
The FNB Ikey Tigers left it late, and very nearly threw it away, but – in the end – they rallied back strongly to secure a 37-30 victory over Villager’s in WP Super League action on Friday night.
The Ikeys scored five tries to three at a windy Green Mile, but very nearly threw this match away as the lead changed hands on many occasions.
Former UCT flyhalf Warren Edwards was a huge thorn in the UCT side, his three conversions and two penalties keeping the visitors in the hunt throughout.
His drop-goal, in the last few minutes, gave Villager’s the lead, before the home side secured the win through a Marcello Sampson try – flanker Don Armand doing brilliantly in helping set up both of Sampson’s tries on the night.
UCT led 20-17 at half-time, before trailing 27-30 with time running out – until Sampson’s two tries secured the victory.
Aside from Sampson’s brace, forwards Sam Peter (No.8) and Hanyani Shimange also scored, whilst young winger Paul Cohen (pictured) – who is developing into a points-machine of note – also touched for a try to go with his three conversions and two penalty goals.
