Off-colour UCT lose at home

An under-strength Ikey Tigers team suffered a shock 18-25 WP Super League loss to ‘Durbel’ at Groote Schuur on Saturday.

Missing Western Province Under-21 stars Tiger Bax, Dane Johnson, Tim Whitehead, Stu Commins, Martin Muller and Dayne Jans and injured first team regulars Marvin Christians, Marcello Sampson, Dave Edgar, Mark Goosen and Dylan Rogers, UCT were unable to find the necessary consistency against their dogged opponents.

The scores were tied at 18-18 going into the last few minutes on Saturday, but a late converted try – from a clever cross-kick from the visitors – saw UCT lose out in the end, despite a frantic finale which saw a ‘Durbel’ player yellow carded.

The Ikeys – who have had some tough fixtures, against Victorians and Saracens, in the past few days – host Helderberg at the Green Mile next weekend and will look to redeem themselves with a solid victory.
