Powerful Pukke top Pirates league

FNB Pukke ensured that they would end the 2009 season on top of the Pirates Grand Challenge log, after smashing Roodepoort 66-16 on Wednesday.

Pukke, the 2009 Varsity Cup finalists, have been in fine form throughout the season and had already sealed their place at the National Club Championships which take place in Pretoria next month.

Wednesday night’s game was again no different. After running into a more than handy 42-16 half-time lead, they kept their opponents scoreless and scored 24 points of their own in the second half.

Inside centre John Roodt scored a hat-trick of tries and Nelis Nel grabbed a double on the night, the duo responsible for half of their team’s tries, whilst fullback Theo Kotze kicked seven conversions.

Pukke, under the tutelage of Rudy Joubert, will be one of the favourites at the Club Champs – and rightly so.

They will be joined by fellow Varsity Cup team, Shimlas, at the Club Champs; with Maties, Tukkies and UJ all narrowly missing out in their respective provinces.

Pukke’s scorers:
Tries:
John Roodt 3, Nelis Nel 2, Theuns Kotzé, Jaco Lotter, Wouter Watermeyer, Mandy de Kock, Andries Mahoney
Cons: Theuns Kotzé 7, Jaco Lotter
