Pukke crowned Sassu champions

Varsity Cup finalists, FNB Pukke, picked up some silverware when they beat FNB UJ in the final of the 2009 South African Student Sports Union (Sassu) tournament in Johannesburg on Friday evening.

Pukke, with captain Willem van der Wal (pictured) scoring two tries, beat UJ 25-16 in a hard-fought final to pick up another title to go with their 2008 National Club Championships victory.

Pukke – who led 15-3 at half-time – scored three tries to one in the end, with Marcel du Toit adding two conversions and a penalty and a drop-goal for a valuable tally of 11 points on the night.

The 2009 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International runners-up beat Maties 25-15 last week (a spot of revenge for their Varsity Cup Final loss), whilst UJ beat defending Sassu champions, Shimlas (another Varsity Cup outfit), 29-15 in order to progress to the final.

Meanwhile, according to suparugby.com, UJ fullback Earl Lewis won the Back of the Tournament Award, with Maties lock walking off with the Forward of the Tournament gong.
