Pukke top Grand Challenge log
2009 Varsity Cup finalists, FNB Pukke, top the Pirates Grand Challenge log after the latest round of league action – but all the teams below them have at least one game in hand.
Pukke, under the coaching of Rudy Joubert, have played eight matches; picking up six wins and a total of 30 log points in the process.
Next on the table, in second place, are Pirates with 23 points, followed by Impala (also on 23) and another Varsity Cup team, UJ, on 19 points.
But Pirates, Impala and UJ (along with fifth-placed Roodepoort) have all played just six matches and most of those sides are within striking distance of the Varsity Cup finalists.
Even though the Pukke play in the Pirates Grand Challenge they will, of course, represent the Leopards region at the National Club Championships – at Tukkies – in September.
They will, however, have to ensure they edge out the third-placed Impala in order to nail down the right to represent the Leopards at the Club Champs.
That means the likes of Pirates, UJ and Roodepoort will slug it out for the right to represent the Golden Lions catchment area at the Club Champs – like UJ did in Stellenbosch in 2008.
