Taskmaster Van As eyes improvement

Coach Hugo van As was satisfied with the result of UJ’s opening Varsity Cup match against the FNB TUT Vikings, but not with the way in which his team executed their gameplan.

FNB UJ beat FNB TUT Vikings 28-14 last night (Monday), but their head coach is expecting a huge improvement come next week’s clash with Tukkies in Pretoria.

“It’s obviously a very good start to take full points from the first game of the season, but the players and I know we did not play to our full potential,” Van As told varsitycup.co.za.

“We’ll have to make a step up for the game against FNB Tuks as the defeat against Pukke will only make them more formidable foes. I thought Tuks showed a lot of class and we will not be comforted by their defeat.”

Delving further into his own team’s post-match analysis, Van As added: “The highlights of our performance against TUT were our solid defence and set-phase play.

“We really defended well and the big challenge now is to get our finishing and decision making on the same level. We could have scored at least three more tries had we stuck to the gameplan more clinically.”

In strong contrast with FNB Tuks’ long list of injured players, UJ came through their first match with nothing more than a few bumps and bruises. The whole squad will be available for selection against Tuks.
