UJ compound CUT's woes
The writing was on the wall early in the encounter and the victory all-but-sealed at the half-time interval when UJ held a more than healthy 50-15 lead. Credit must be given to the Ixias though as they narrowly missed on a four-try bonus point.
UJ came out firing and took the lead in the fourth minute when wing Tshegofatso Ramaboea raced from inside his half to grab a seven-pointer. Divan Nel failed with the conversion but the visitors led 7-0.
Fullback Ewan Adams stretched their lead in the ninth minute with a seven-pointer of his own. This time Nel managed to add the extras to ensure a 16-0 lead.
CUT then hit back with two tries of their own to get themselves back in the game. Scrumhalf Ruben Heymans and flyhalf Martin Jacobs crossing the try-line. Jacobs could only add one conversion but made up for it a minute later when he slotted his first penalty of the match to trail UJ 15-16 after 27 minutes.
The final 11 minutes belonged to UJ as they ran in four tries to put some breathing space between themselves and CUT. Aphiwe Dyanti, captain Jannes Snyman and centre Jaco Fourie each grabbed seven point tries while Adams grabbed his second of the match. Nel converted all of those tries to ensure a 50-15 lead at the half-time interval.
It took an age for some points to be scored in the second half but it eventually came in the 66th minute when CUT managed to get over for their third try of the encounter which went unconverted to trail 20-50.
That would be the last of their scoring though as the final minutes belonged to the visitors. UJ grabbed their seventh try, converted by Nel before Estian Enslin made it eight. Nel added the extras again to ensure a 64-20 lead with two minutes remaining.
UJ had the final say of the match when Wian Conradie crossed for a seven pointer – his side's ninth of the match. Nel popped over the extras to complete the emphatic victory.
