Varsity Cup bears fruit

The FNB Varsity Cup – just two weeks old has attracted the attention of South African Sevens coach, Paul Treu.

True invited five youngsters to attend the Bok’s training session in Stellenbosch on Wednesday after watching them play in the Varsity Cup on Monday.

This is a great boost for the FNB Varsity Cup that has already been a roaring success and is set give many youngsters more exposure.

Among the players chosen is 20-year-old UCT wing, ‘Marvellous’ Marvin Christiaans.

The speedy Christiaans scored four times for the Ikey Tigers in their 55-24 drubbing of Tukkies on Monday.

It’s well known that Treu is looking for more physical players to compete with the likes of the All Blacks, and Christiaans fits the bill perfectly.

He’s big and fast and given time to develop his game, could make the step up to senior rugby.

Former Springbok centre Robbie Fleck, who coaches the UCT backline has been impressed by Christiaans.

“Marvin’s a young kid with good pace and he runs well off the ball,” he told rugby365.com.

Fleck, who has thrown his weight behind the FNB Varsity Cup was once again full of praise for the Monday night competition.

“It proves that opportunities can come out of a fantastic tournament like this and it’s great to see a few of these youngsters recognised by Paul Treu,” he said.

The other players scouted by Treu are centre Robert Ebersohn and fullback Wilton Pietersen of the Shimlas, Tukkies wing Gerhard van den Heever and Danie Poolman of the WP Academy.
