INJURY UPDATE: Young USA prop David Ainu’u will miss the rest of the World Cup after sustaining a severe ankle injury only minutes into the Eagles’ match against England, the team said Saturday.

The 19-year-old Toulouse front-row “will fly home to continue his recovery”, the USA team management said, calling up Chance Wenglewski to replace him.

Ainu’u limped off only three minutes into the Pool C game against England, which the Eagles went on to lose 7-45.

Coach Gary Gold told reporters after the game that “David’s badly rolled his ankle -– he’s having a scan to assess the severity, probably a Grade 2, possibly Grade 3”.

Gold was furious with his players after the defeat, calling on them to improve “every aspect” of their game for their next clash against France on October 2.

Fullback Will Hooley and inside centre Paul Lasike were also injured in the match and are continuing their recovery, the USA team said.
