Old Trafford shuns WC

Manchester United have scotched plans for their Old Trafford stadium to host games at the 2015 World Cup due to concerns about damage to the pitch, according to British media reports on Wednesday.

Tournament organisers are reported to be in talks with Manchester City about holding matches at the Etihad Stadium instead.

An announcement on the tournament schedule is due to be made later this month, when London's Olympic Stadium is also expected to be listed as a venue for the September 18 to October 31 tournament.

United are installing a new pitch at Old Trafford in the close season this year and the club are reportedly concerned that rugby matches would cause too much damage to the playing surface.

The high, steep stands at Old Trafford provide a challenge to United's groundsmen, with poor air circulation and a lack of sunlight hindering pitch recovery.
