Player ratings: Tattered kilts
Apart from a few players, the Scotland team struggled against an aggressive South African defence and creativity in the backline.
Warren Fortune rates the Scottish players!
15 Stuart Hogg
Tried his best to spark something on attack for his team. He was also one of the few Scottish players to keep the Springboks' defence guessing.
7/10
14 Tommy Seymour
Carried the ball nicely and got over the gain line on a number of occasions. He also got his team's only try. The wing can be proud of his performance.
6/10
13 Richie Vernon
He did not get much ball from Matt Scott and Duncan Weir. When he did get it he failed to unleash his wings.
5/10
12 Matt Scott
Conceded a few turnovers and struggled against the abrasive Damian de Allende in the midfield. It was a tough game for the centre.
4/10
11 Tim Visser
Got owned by JP Pietersen out wide and looked like a deer caught in headlights when he did get the ball. He did make one good carry which improved his statistics.
4/10
10 Duncan Weir
Was not as brave on attack like his opposite number and did not give his backline much to work with. A very predictable performance by the flyhalf but did play a major role in his team's try with an intercept.
6/10
9 Greig Laidlaw (captain)
His distribution from the breakdown was good, but like his flyhalf there was a lack of variation in his play. He also got yellow carded for some cynical play. Scotland needed a bit more direction from their captain.
5/10
8 David Denton
Worked hard against the physical Springbok forwards and was brave in the collisions. However, he would not have been happy with the amount of metres he made with ball in hand.
5/10
7 Blair Cowan
Was bullied in the collisions and made almost no impact with ball in hand. He did however make an extraordinary amount of tackles for his team on defence.
4/10
6 Josh Strauss
The flank carried the ball more than any other Scottish player and gave a good account of himself against his country of birth. However, he was tackled back on a number of occasions.
5/10
5 Jonny Gray
Did well in the line-outs, but could not match the impressive Lood de Jager in the physical exchanges. He was also asked make a number of tackles before being substituted in the second half.
5/10
4 Richie Gray
Like his brother he was asked to do a lot on defence – in fact he made more tackles than any other player on the park. He is definitely in Vern Cotter's good books for that but he also failed to get his team over the gain line with his carries.
6/10
3 Willem Nel
The South African-born prop struggled against Tendai Mtawarira in the scrums in the first half and looked out of sorts in open play. Not the best of showings by the forward.
4/10
2 Fraser Brown
Found his jumpers in the line-outs more often than not and also had a good work rate in open play with his carries. The burly hooker also made a number of good tackles.
6/10
1 Gordon Reid
Was solid in the scrums and was busy in defence as well. However, like Nel he let his team down in open play with a poor work rate.
4/10
Replacements:
16 Ross Ford (On for F Brown, 60min)
Made no difference when he came on. Scotland were better off leaving Fraser Brown on the field.
2/10
17 Alasdair Dickinson (On for G Reid, 50 min)
Was good on defence when he came on and also gave his team some parity in the scrums.
6/10
18 Jon Welsh (On for WP Nel, 63 min)
Was poor in the 17 minutes he was on the field and also conceded a turnover within minutes of his arrival on the field.
3/10
19 Tim Swinson (On for J Gray, 68 min)
Not enough time to be rated.
20 Ryan Wilson (On for J Strauss, 55min)
Made a few metres with his carries but could not match Josh Strauss' performance on the park.
3/10
21 Sam Hidalgo-Clyne (On for G Laidlaw, 69 min)
Not enough time to be rated.
22 Peter Horne (On for R Vernon, 65 min)
Not enough time to be rated.
23 Sean Lamont (On for S Hogg, 63 min)
Did nothing for much of the time he was on the field.
