SA to bid for 2023 World Cup

South Africa are planning a bid to host the 2023 World Cup, SA Rugby Union Chief Executive Jurie Roux said.

"We are planning on bidding to again host the World Cup in South Africa in 2023," Roux told the Bloemfontein-based Afrikaans language newspaper Volksblad.

South Africa hosted and won the 1995 World Cup, defeating the New Zealand All Blacks 15-12 in a final which then-president Nelson Mandela watched wearing a replica of the No.6 shirt worn by skipper Francois Pienaar.

The four-yearly Rugby World Cup ranks among the major international sporting events with England (2015) and Japan (2019) selected to stage the next two editions.
