'Tough times': Boks send World Cup message to Snyman

SPOTLIGHT: Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick says lock Rudolph Snyman can have an important role to play for the Boks this year if he is in “good shape”.

Earlier this week, Munster revealed that the lock is finally available for selection again.

Snyman has endured a dreadful time since joining the Irish province in 2020. He has only made four appearances for Munster, with injuries and a firepit accident in June 2021 keeping him on the sidelines.

He played an important role in South Africa’s World Cup success as he was part of the famous ‘Bomb Squad’, which consisted of six forwards and two backs on the bench.

“I’ve seen him when I was in Ireland. He is desperate to get back onto the field,” said Stick.

“He has been going through tough times in the last two years. Unfortunately, it [injuries] is part of the game.

“He is a strong character and a strong human being. so I hope things will go well for him this season and if he gets back into shape then maybe we can consider him for the World Cup squad.”

Stick said having Snyman in the matchday squad again will strike fear into their opponents.

“I don’t think there is a coach who will complain when he has got RG Snyman in the team,” said Stick.

“If you look at his stature, he is massive. He is probably over two metres tall and he has the skills as well.

“The only thing for him is to get back into good shape and we know he is a very special player.

“Having him on the bench with someone like Franco Mostert is what makes it a Bomb Squad.

“It doesn’t help to have six forwards on the bench, but they don’t bring the same impact.

“Just imagine you are a lock and you are playing against Lood [De Jager] and Eben [Etzebeth] and all of a sudden, when you think you can have a break, then RG Snyman comes onto the field.

“I don’t think there is a player who wants to face that in the 80 minutes.

“Once again, If we can get him back onto the field at his best, it will be good for our team and it will also be good for our squad depth.”
